(Washington, September 7, 2005) The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, and Enrique García, Executive President of the Andean Development Corporation (CAF) signed a credit agreement today for $35,000 to support the role of the OAS as secretariat of the Summits of the Americas process and of the Joint Summit Working Group.
With this Agreement, the CAF seeks to support the work of the OAS and of the Joint Summit Working Group in promoting broad participation from diverse sectors of civil society. It will also help improve the communications channels through which civil society organizations consult with and make recommendations to the governments of the Americas in the preparation and implementation of the Summits’ Plans of Action. It will also support the consolidation of the objectives of the IV Summit of the Americas which will take place in November, in Argentina. The Summit will focus on “Creating Jobs to Fight Poverty and Strengthen Democratic Governance.”
CAF’s Executive President emphasized that this organization has played an active role in the Summits process, as it belong to the Joint Summit Working Group, and considers the promotion of sustainable development and regional integration to be a pillar of its mission. Garcia said that the CAF has developed important regional support initiatives for its country shareholders and encouraged at a regional level a renewed development model, that consolidates an pattern of sustainable growth and good quality, generates employment, and is inclusive and beneficial to the majority of citizens.
